Elizabeth Matthews

Elizabeth Matthews is an artist working in painting, sculpture, and mixed media installation in the West of Ireland. She has exhibited work internationally, in Ireland, the UK and the US. She is a PhD researcher in Studio Art at National University of Ireland, Galway and the Burren College of Art, interested in experiment with artistic production and its reception as a way to engage with philosophical discourse where ‘pure’ intellectual activity falls short. With a focus on the utopian aspect, the ‘not yet’, embedded in the work of French philosopher Luce Irigaray on ‘sexuate difference’ and art, her practice based research proposes a reading of utopian impulses in contemporary art practices as forming a vital space to critique and re-imagine, to link theory and practice.
